Day 17

Welcome to DAY 17 of the day to day living of our beautiful baby Bengal Eagle Owl

So what has today had in store for me....well to start with I have moved home again – in that I am back in my cosy small box – yeah!!! Have to say I hated the big box as I just couldn't see what was going on around me...and we all know what us females are like – nosy!!!

And dad has moved my anklet too – he moved it so that it is below my leg ring – just so the ring wasn't digging in my foot – it's far more comfortable now too!!

I have been out the box and walking about again – I love to be free – but having said that, I like to keep an eye on where mum or dad are – its probably cute to watch me as I wander off across the room but as soon as I know they have started walking away from me I almost run, skip, jump along to catch back up with them....

Nothing much else to tell you – could be cos mum and dad had the afternoon out so I had total peace and quiet in my lovely little box - to sprawl out and do as I want to do without either of them walking by and patting my head, stroking my back or touching my beak and talons – I love all that but sometimes its nice not to have it too!!!

The dull daily info for you now....weight is 2lb now and I have had 8 chicks ...I think I might have to start doing more exercise before I end up plump and stodgy!!!

Right then that's all for today folks – just a handful of  piccies for you to look through today....

Till next time....night....x....

Day 16

Welcome to DAY 16 of the day to day living of our beautiful baby Bengal Eagle Owl

Thanks for dropping by again – I have YET another treat today so at least have more news to share with you!

Today dad made me my first pair of jesses – these are just training jesses – but I am so proud of them – and they make my legs look a lot slimmer too which is good!!! Dad made a good job of them – between you and me though, when he gathered all the tools and leather I did wonder what on earth was going on – it was a huge relief when he finally finished and I saw what he had made!

I heard dad explaining to mum that generally birds hate having to have jesses on the first time – but to me it wasn't a big deal! They dont hurt and I think they look pretty classy – don't you?

The reason for the these is so a leash can be slotted through the eyelet and its that what is held on to when a bird is on the glove – let go of the leash and the bird will fly off – for those who followed Polly's blog – you know what I'm talking about!

So all dressed up in new leather jesses I was sat on the glove for quite a while really – I am getting better by the day – guess I just have to accept this is the norm so the sooner I adapt and get on with it the better it is for us all!

Dad actually took me out into the garden too – he let me walk about on the floor – it was great fun – but I did feel the cold after being under the heat bulb for big parts of the day and all night! But this is something else I will have to adapt to – wont be to much longer before I am spending my days out in the fresh air just like Polly, Gizmo and Kai....

When dad put me on the kitchen worktop so I could show of my new additions to mum, he threw a chick my way – what the.... so far I have had my chicks all chopped up and the yolk is drained before I get fed – I have the mice whole – but so far not a chick! As it was I just wasn't hungry so just walked around the chick watching it – well you never know when something like this is going to pounce – and I wanted to be ready for it.....

And first for me today – dad changed my box over – so now I am in a big deep box – its not much fun – I cant really see through it, and there is no way I can see over it – so feel pretty isolated! Dad commented to mum he thought I was over quiet so is taking it as a sign I aren't happy in the bog box – he said tomorrow he will put me back in the small one until I realise I can climb out...

The daily info for you now....weight a gnats hair below 2lb now and I have had 7 chicks and 1 mouse – wow I am getting greedier aren't I?

Right then that's all for today folks – just the piccies for you to look through!!!!

Till next time....night....x....

Day 15

Welcome to DAY 15 of the day to day living of our beautiful baby Bengal Eagle Owl

Thanks for dropping by again – I have another treat today so at least have more news to share with you!

We had a visit today from Esta – a friend that came to be when she oohed and cooed over Polly as a baby – she has a few owls of her own – and she came to have a natter with mum!! Don’t know why – but I just didn’t take to her – in fact I was positively awful to her!!! She came in all soft voiced, put her hand in to stroke me and Whoosh – I had it!!!!

Esta did try picking me up but I wasn't having any of it – so I clicked and hissed and flapped and made a real meal of it all till she finally gave in and left me alone!!!

And now for the really good news.... I have a name....Uluka...and below is the meaning of my name and why it was given to me....

In Asia in the Hindu religion, the owl has a complex dualistic symbolism. Its primary role is as a Vahana, a divine vehicle or mount on which a goddess can ride. The deity in question is Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, and her owl is called ULUKA – pronounced U-LOOK-A”

The info was taken from a book mum bought dad for Christmas called OWL by Desmond Morris – its full of all sorts of info some useful lots no so according to dad!!!

Of course I am a curious owl so when mum decided to take me out of my box and was given the freedom to roam, I had to investigate....so I plodded all over the room until I found the doormat – oh what softness on my feet that was – I could have curled up and slept on it – but mum was quick to shoo me off it – it was a case of play and make the most of been out the box – or get back in it!!

I think I was roaming for around half an hour and mum did take piccies – she was trying to get shots of my lovely new feathers and I do think she managed to get at least one!!!

The daily info for you now....weight 1lb 15 ¼ oz and I have had 7 chicks and 2 mice – I have put on an ounce today. I'm certain dad is keeping a watchful eye on me but to let me have so much food – is it a party I wonder?

Well the day is not far from over so I've added the photos of today and will leave you to enjoy them....
Till next time....

Day 14

Welcome to DAY 14 of the day to day living of our beautiful baby Bengal Eagle Owl

Hello - Good evening & Welcome

Thanks for dropping by again – I have had a bit of a treat today so at least have more news to share with you!

We had a visit today from Vicky and Layton – Vicky had to go somewhere so Layton stayed with his grandma, grandad and me!!!

Layton came downstairs clutching a game of some sort and asked grandad to play – so they were both laid put on the floor with the game opened out

Of course I am a curious baby owl so as I was out of my box and given the freedom to roam, I had to investigate....

Now I'm sure you will agree here – any good investigation means you really have to get right into it – so I did!! I stood right in the middle of the board!! No longer was it snakes and ladders – it was now chase the owl!!!!! Layton was quite shocked that I was walking all over the board and disturbing the counters whereas all grandad could do was laugh!

The game was finished probably quicker than normal and Layton packed it back in its box and took it away – the spoil sport!

But then he came down with his set of domino's – oh what fun this was going to be....I watched him stand his domino's up and I walked into them – ooppss!!! Layton again was not at all amused – then again he is only 3 years old!! He was getting pretty stressed by me so grandad decided I had to go back in my box and then he and Layton went to play in another room....

It was fun while it lasted!!!

The daily info for you now....weight 1lb 14 ¼ oz and I have had 5 chicks and 1 mouse – I haven't put on any weight today – is that a good or bad sign? I'm certain dad is keeping a watchful eye on me so lets not worry about it!!!

I'm going to share a little secret now – I think I have a name!!! Heard mum and dad talking about it today....

What is it did I hear you say?

Erm...now that would be telling.....keep tuned in for the official naming ceremony folks!

These photos are what dad took of Layton and me....pretty good eh? Which is the handsome one.....

And these are the photos that Layton took of me when he took control of the camera – not bad at all are they?

Right folks – that's your lot for today

Till next time....
